Symbol software tends to get filed under “AAC” and handed straight to the SENCo or the specialist teacher. That’s understandable: augmentative and alternative communication is exactly what many symbol tools are built for, and Sensory Symboliser does that job well. But treating symbol support as something only for specialist provision means a lot of classrooms miss out on a tool that has a much wider everyday use and costs nothing to try.
Sensory Symboliser sits quietly in the background on a Windows 10 or 11 machine. Select text in Word, Chrome, a PDF, an email or Notepad, and a small button appears offering to symbolise it. Accept, and each word or phrase is matched to a picture symbol, with the option to have the text read aloud sentence by sentence with word-level highlighting as it goes. Symbolised text can also be printed in a classroom-ready layout, useful for a visual timetable, a communication board, or a worksheet with symbols above the key vocabulary. All of this runs offline, on the device, with no internet connection needed.
The matching goes beyond a simple word-to-picture lookup. It checks for a direct match first, then lemmatisation (so “running” finds the symbol for “run”), then synonym matching (so “joyful” finds the symbol for “happy”), drawing on a library of more than 692,000 entries across six bundled symbol sets, Bliss, Mulberry, and four styles of PiCom, more than 26,000 symbols in total. Schools with their own symbol library, or a need for something more specific, can import it directly as a ZIP file.
Most symbol-support tools are built around their own authoring environment: boards or documents are created inside that one piece of software, and the support only exists there. Symboliser works differently. It sits on top of whatever the class is already using, so a symbol layer can be added to a science worksheet, a reading comprehension in Word, an email from (or to) a parent, or a PDF handout, without rebuilding anything in a separate tool. That’s a genuinely different way of thinking about symbol support: rather than living in one dedicated environment reserved for one pupil, it’s a layer any pupil, in any subject, can call on when they need it.
It’s also free and asks very little of the person using it. There’s no training course to complete before you can try it: select the text, click once, and the symbols appear. That matters more than it might sound. A tool that needs a special licence, a login, or its own budget line tends, in practice, to end up underused by the pupils it was originally purchased for, often those with an EHCP or a formal AAC need on their plan. A free tool that already sits on a school’s existing Windows machines can be picked up by any teacher, for any pupil, without a conversation about cost or entitlement first. This puts it much closer to “ordinarily available provision”, the kind of support a mainstream classroom is expected to offer as part of good, inclusive teaching, rather than something that has to be assessed, funded and formally allocated before a child can access it.
Symboliser also processes everything on the device, with nothing sent to an external server to generate the symbols. That’s a genuinely useful feature where keeping information local matters, but it doesn’t replace a school’s own checks: any new tool, free or not, should still go through the usual IT and data-protection sign-off before it’s rolled out. What the offline design does remove is a class of common blockers: no cloud account to provision, no data-sharing agreement to negotiate with a third party, no subscription approval to wait on. The practical route to trying it out is shorter than it is for most software a school might otherwise consider.
In an early years or Key Stage 1 classroom, combining text with pictures to support emerging readers is nothing new; Symboliser simply does it automatically, on whatever resource is already in front of the class, rather than needing symbol-supported materials to be sourced or made specially. For a pupil learning English as an additional language, a symbol next to an unfamiliar word offers another route into its meaning, alongside whatever bilingual support is already in place and without pulling them away from the lesson to look a word up.
For pupils with dyslexia, processing difficulties or moderate learning difficulties, symbol support can sit alongside other reading support already in use. Text-to-speech gives an auditory route into the text, word-level highlighting helps a reader keep their place, and a symbol adds a visual cue alongside the word itself. None of these guarantee understanding on their own, but for some learners, having more than one route into the same piece of text is what makes it accessible.
For a subject teacher who isn’t a specialist in any of this, the appeal is how little it asks of them. Turning a worksheet or a slide into something symbol-supported doesn’t mean building it from scratch in separate software; it’s the same one-click action already described, done on whatever’s on screen. That puts a genuinely useful piece of differentiation within reach of any teacher covering any subject, not only staff already trained on a specialist AAC package.
That doesn’t mean symbols belong on everything, for everyone, all the time. As with any adjustment, the useful question is the same one the graduated approach already asks: does this help this learner with this task, right now? Too much visual information competes for attention rather than supporting it for some pupils, while for others a symbol is exactly the extra cue that unlocks a passage they’d otherwise have given up on. Because adding symbols takes seconds rather than a rebuild, a teacher can try it, see what happens, and drop it again if it isn’t earning its place, in the same way they’d review any other support.

Given how little setup it needs, it’s a reasonable tool to put in front of any member of staff, not just the ones already working with symbol support day to day, and to let them decide for themselves where it’s useful.
None of this is an argument against dedicated AAC software for the pupils who need it; that remains a dedicated provision, doing a job a general symbolising tool isn’t built to replace. The point is narrower: helping someone access unfamiliar text with a visual symbol is useful well beyond the small number of pupils formally identified for symbol support, and with Sensory Symboliser, it costs nothing.
